What Does Anti-Aging Mean Anyway?

Writer: Ruth HrobakRuth Hrobak

Is it realistic to believe we can stop aging?  After 30+ years as an Esthetician, I have never seen anyone stop or reverse aging.  However, I have seen the process slow down by administering filler agents, full face lifts, partial face lifts, laser treatments and more.  Effectively though, you are still wearing the same skin--although tighter or plumper.

Ask for the right products.

Starting at the of age 30, our skin cells turn over less than we did when we were younger. This is the aging process. According to Healthline, "There are two types of aging, cellular or intrinsic aging and environmental or extrinsic aging. Intrinsic aging is a genetically predetermined process that occurs naturally, but may increase with stress. Extrinsic aging is a result of outside factors, like where you live and your lifestyle habits."

When aging occurs you will be left with sallow or dull looking skin.  Certainly, you can use the aforementioned solutions to enhance appearance, but you still are wearing the same skin. Simple routines like a cleanser, exfoliating (two to three times a week) and moisture are good, but not enough.

Keep up your routine regularly.

Some other things that may help include: stem cell products, Hyaluronic acid serum, Vitamin C or a Retinol for dark spots.  Regular facials can assist with cell turn over by removing the dry dead skin, thus allowing products to penetrate more. Either a good exfoliation product or Microdermabrasion can have positive effects too.  Facial massage (besides feeling great) is a key in bringing oxygen to the cells to aid in improving appearance with a healthy glow and suppleness. Depending on your age, you should have regular facials every 30 to 40 days.

A good, consistent home care regime in-between will keep your skin looking its best. Work with an Esthetician to come up with a custom plan to slow down the appearance of aging. Remember, if you have had other cosmetic procedures, work with your Esthetician or doctor on changes to your routine to best maintain the results.
