The Art of Grocery: Specialized Food Shops

Writer: Helen LawlerHelen Lawler

There is nothing better than walking into a specialized food store and be greeted with unique favorites and artisan delights. Walking into one of these shops creates a sense of excitement and anticipation looking for a traditional item or a new find. Whether it is an international dish, curated imports, freshly prepared take home meals or a propriety recipe, these shops bring the foodie out in all of us.

One of these fun places is Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace. Founded in 1998 on Long Island, today the chain boasts 11 stores in New York and New Jersey. Claiming "traditional old-fashioned Italian recipes, and using the highest quality ingredients available," Uncle Giuseppe's provides an old-fashioned neighborhood market.

When you enter you will be immediately greeted by Italian music, the smell of freshly baked breads and an array of old-school Italian recipes like eggplant rollatini and penne with vodka sauce. Fresh pastas, sauces, cheeses, special meats and quality produce line the aisles--making you feel like a kid in a candy store. Ravioli, fettuccini and penne are just a few in a wide array of fresh pasta choices. If you love olives, there are plenty to select from in a rainbow of green, black and more. Need an antipasto tray? Uncle Giuseppe's has a selection of salami, prosciutto and other delicacies to get your appetite going.

Speaking of candy, they have fresh-made candy from truffles to chocolate pretzels. Not to mention a fantastic selection of pastries like cannoli, Italian cookies, cheesecake, lobster claws, as well as home made gelato.

While you are shopping, look for other items not usually found in the big grocery stores. Try the imported Auricchio Provolone or the market-made mozzarella. And, if you need them, there are some standard items such as milk, eggs, yogurt, and cereal to make shopping convenient too.

If you need to run in for lunch, you will find a generous amount of hot foods at the self-serve bar and a pizzeria area for pies and stromboli.

Every aisle is a new adventure! Whatever you like, Uncle Giuseppe's is bound to make any foodie fall in love.
